At Dekomforter Resource Foundation (DRF), we understand that one of the most critical needs for survivors of domestic violence is access to safe housing. Escaping an abusive environment is often the first step toward freedom, but finding a secure and supportive place to rebuild can be overwhelming. That’s why DRF is committed to providing safe, temporary shelter and affordable housing for survivors in Cook and Lake counties.
Why Safe Housing is Crucial
Leaving an abusive situation is often the most dangerous time for a survivor. Many women and families delay leaving because they fear they won’t have anywhere to go. Our safe housing program provides:
- Immediate refuge: A safe space where survivors can escape harm and begin the healing process without fear of their abuser finding them.
- Confidential locations: Our shelters are in discreet locations to protect the privacy and safety of survivors.
- Support services: Survivors staying in our housing will have access to counseling, legal support, and life skills training to help them regain control of their lives.
The Role of Transitional Housing
After staying in emergency shelters, survivors often need transitional or long-term housing options. DRF’s affordable housing programs are designed to give survivors the stability they need to move forward. These housing options provide:
- A supportive community: Residents in our housing programs benefit from ongoing counseling, career support, and community building to help them regain their independence.
- Affordable living options: Many survivors struggle financially after leaving an abusive relationship. Our affordable housing allows them to focus on recovery without the burden of high rent costs.
- Empowerment and independence: Transitional housing gives survivors time to build a stable future, whether they’re furthering their education, seeking employment, or focusing on their personal growth.
Who Can Benefit?
DRF’s safe housing program serves women, children, and families who are fleeing domestic violence. We also work with other at-risk groups such as:
